TPR and TPRS using Multiple Intelligences

MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES by Howard Gardner

"It's not how smart you are, it's how you are smart."

As you probably know there 8 different intelligences.
* verbal-linquistic              (word-smart)
* logical-mathematical       (number-smart)
* visual-spatial                  (picture-smart)
* musical-rythmic              (music-smart)
* interpersonal                  (people-smart)
* intrapersonal                  (self-smart)
* naturalistic                      (nature-smart)

A SECOND LANGUAGE THROUGH ACTION

TPR and TPRS are both using the different intelligences and that's what the method makes it interesting for all the children.

TPR stands for Total Physical Pespons.
TPR is learning by doing. The teacher shows the method and the pupils copy.
The teacher say basic sentences with physical body action. For example the teacher says: 'Stand up' and the teacher actually stands up. The teacher does that several times and the pupils copy the action. When the pupils remember the actions without copying the teacher, the next step can be introduced --> speaking. It doesn't matter if there are pupils who are slower, because they may copy the other pupils.

TPRS stands for Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling.
It is more asking the story, then telling the story. Actually it should be Story'asking'.
TPRS is a print or story and the teacher ask questions about it.
- To learn a language you have to got comprehensive input.
- To learn the pupils must talk.
- It doesn't matter how slow you learn, as long you don't stop.

An example of TPRS:
You start with a statement and choose a subject-->     "The rabbit is hopping on the grass."

+            Is the rabbit hopping on the grass?                                            YES
or           Is the rabbit or the spider hopping on the grass?                        THE RABBIT
-             Is the spider hopping on the grass?                                            NO
?            Who is hopping on the grass?                                                    THE RABBIT
detail      How does the rabbit feels when he is hopping on the grass?       HAPPY

By circling the questions the pupils learn the language by rehearsing. By adding different subjects and sentences the pupils will understand the structures of the second language.

Stress-free learning! Why? It is safe in a group, you may copy and you have a group response.

TPR and TPRS

Think about your lessons. Do you already use TPR and/or TPRS?

Yes--> Would you recommend TPR and/or TPRS to other teachers?

No--> Could you use TPR and/or TPRS and adapt it in your lessons?
